      • Capacity - Jacobs, Miller
        • Participants were given digit strings to remember. Jacobs found that the mean digit span that people could remember was 9.3. Therefore, STM is limited.
          • Miller found the term chunking, and the magic number of 7
      • Coding - Baddeley
        • Baddeley aimed to show that different memory stores input information differently.
          • 4 groups acoustically similar and not, semantically similar or not. Recall in STM worse with acoustically similar words, but recall in LTM  worse with semantically similar words.
            • Therefore, information is coded semantically in LTM and acoustically in STM.
      • Duration - Bahrick, Peterson and Peterson
        • Bahrick investigated LTM duration using 393 American former/still students
          • High school yearbooks were used. Those tested within 15 years of graduation were 90% accurate in photo recognition. Free recall was 60%. Those tested 48 years after were 70% in photo recognition but 30% in free recall.
            • Therefore, LTM is very long, sometimes even a lifetime. Low control study.

      • Three type : Episodic (Life events), Semantic (Knowledge), Procedural (Muscle memory)
        • A limitation of that strength is that there is a lack of control in clinical studies, as they do not know anything about patients brains before the damage. Therefore, clinical studies are limited in what they tell us about the types of LTM.
    • STM, The Working Memory Model
      • Visuospatial sketchpad: Stores visual/spatial information
      • Episodic Buffer: Maintians time sequencing, also a temporary store for the other parts.
      • Phonological Loop: Stores auditory information. Split into two parts: Phonological store, and the articulatory process.
      • Central Executive: Supervisory role, monitors the other slave systems.
