      • Demonstrates her hubris + how she doesn't see her the effect of her actions.

      • DI - Eric is the father of the child but too ignorant + self-obsessed to realize.
      • Passes all the blame onto Eric, feels she has done nothing wrong but Eva should've relied on the father

      • 'you' is italicized. emphasising if she'f have known it was Eric. she would've helped.
      • Shows her hubris + arrogance and privilege, only feels a sense of remorse once she finds out she is related to the child.

      • Pride + arrogance, triumphant that she didn't 'give' into him and embrace the truth + accept responsibility
      • Shows she still doesn't accept any responsibility, even after being made aware of the consequence of her actions

      • Victorian idea of desrving and undeserving (of no use to the upper class) poor
    • As if a girl of that sort would ever refuse money
      • Misjudges Eva. assumes that as she's poor, she's only interested in the money, not  camaraderie
      • Hubristic + condescending tone towards the lower class. Distances himself from them, full of disgust + distaste
    • Really the things you girls pick up these days
      • Protecting young femininity, takes on a snobbish tone. Shows the generational divide as she doesn't truly know her children .
    • Make sure he's compelled to confess in public his responsibility
      • DI - Eric is the father, too pompous to accept it, throws him under the bus
      • Increases dramatic tension - becomes obvious to the audience that Eric is the father, but not to her, as incriminates him further
