  • Mrs. Birling
    • Horrible snob who looks down on those with less money.
    • Refuses to support Eva Smith with money, because she used her name ('Mrs Birling').
      • "gross piece of pertinence"
    • Eric: "You killed her - she came to you to protect me and you turned her away - yes, you killed her - and the child she would've had too - my child - your own grandchild  - you killed them both - damn you.."
    • "about fifty, a rather cold woman, and her husband's social superior"
    • Very aware of the social class differences, gets irritated when Arthur compliments the cook and calls Eva "girls of that class"
    • Has the least respect for the Inspector. She tries to intimidate him and lies when she is shown the photograph.
    • Speaks patronisingly to her children and treats Sheila and Eric like small children. Proves she does not know anything about her kids and has no close relationship with them, when she find out Eric is an alcoholic.
    • Blames the 'father' of Eva's baby for Eva's death, then realises it was her own son, then blames Eva herself.
    • "You're quite wrong to suppose I shall regret what I did"
    • "(agitated now) Oh, stop it, both of you. And please remember before you start accusing me of anything again that it wasn't I who had her turned out of her employment – which probably began it all."'
