  • Motivation: the ways in which our actions are initiated, sustained, directed and terminated - push of internal needs + pull of external stimuli
    • Biological motives: needs that must be met for survival; essential because they maintain homeostasis (bodily equilibrium)
    • Stimulus motives: needs for stimulation and info - not really necessary for survival
    • Learned motives: learned needs, drives and goals
    • Levels of motivation change with changes in circadian rhythms (cyclical changes in bodily functions and arousal levels that vary on a schedule approx 24 hours - traveling east takes much longer time to adapt than traveling west - exposure to bright light speeds adaptation
