  • Mormons
    • Their proper name was The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.
    • The Church was founded by Joseph Smith in 1830.
    • Their beliefs and way of life made them different from other Americans.
      • Polygmy
    • They travelled west to escape from persecution.
    • In 1823 Smith said that he ha seen a vision of an angel called Moroni. The angel told Smith that he would help him find some golden plates. Mormon, father of Moroni had written scriptures on the golden plates.
      • Eleven people were allowed to see the plates to prove that Smith was telling the truth.
    • The Book of the Mormon- bible of the Mormons and as published in 1830. Describes how Jesus went to America after he rose from the dead. Old testament tribes of Israel migrated to America.
    • The Mormons were pioneers.
    • 1896 Utah became a state.
