- Founded by Joseph Smith
- Had visions of the angel Moroni in 1823 who told him there was golden plates buried underground in New York. Moroni had a father called Mormon.
- Golden plates were found by Smith who translated the writings on them to his brother who wrote them down.
- The writings appear to be the 12 tribes of Israel descended from Joseph & his brothers. Smith called it the Book of Mormon

- They tried 3 times to build Zion but failed.
- 1. Ohio- 1831-37. Bought land to build homes & farms in Kirtland. Prosperous due to openings of store,mill, temple & printing press.
- Outnumbered non Mormons but set up a bank that failed in the national banking crisis of 1837- a lot of people were jealous of the success & were frustrated when their savings were lost. They drove the Mormons out.
- 2. Missouri 1837-38 became prosperous in Cadwell county, were friendly with Indians, set up secret police (Danites). Non Mormons mistrusted their attitudes so burned down Mormon houses. State governor sent in troops to restore order. Joseph Smith was thrown in prison & mormons driven out.
- Illonois 1836-46 they rebuilt the town Commerce & called it Nauvoo-practised polygamy, people criticised JS for being a dictator- he was killed by a mob.
- Chose Brigham Young as leader made a charter with governor but mobs killed Mormons and gov. told Mormons to leave so BY organised emigration.
- BY led the Mormons to great salt lake city where in its isolation between the plateau region in the mountains they were safe.
