  • Momentum and Collisions
    • Momentum is a property of moving objects
      • momentum = mass x velocity
    • The greater the mass of an object the greater its velocity, and so the more momentum the object has
    • Momentum is a vector quantity - it has size and direction
    • In a closed system, the momentum before is equal to the momentum after
      • Called the conservation of momentum
      • Closed system - one where no external forces act
    • When forces act on an object they cause a change in momentum
      • The larger the force the faster the change in momentum
      • The longer it takes an object to chance momentum, the smaller the force
        • Why cars have safety features to slow the car down over a longer time period
