- beta blockers evaluation
- benefits on performance
- Neftel et al 1982 - gave strings players a beta blockers or a placebo 6 ½ hours before performing. Atenolol group had lower heart rates, able to play more complex parts more accurately, less self reported stage fright compared with placebo
- Can be effective in reducing performance anxiety in musicians
- benefit for other aspects of stress
- Criticised for long-term effectiveness
- Beta blockers target outward signs of stress but not psychological and emotional side
- Individual suffering from stress with type A or irrational thinking, drug will not address problem
- Root of cause cannot be addressed
- Therapy such as SIT may be more appropriate for gaining long-term strategies for a range of situations
- Beta blocker may only be useful for performance based scenarios such as stage performance of sport. May not work for chronic stress such as relationship problems or bereavement
- long term effectiveness
- Schwabe et al 2011 - suggests one negative effect of stress is stressed people fall into habits (eg addiction) rather than focusing on important goals
- Lab tasks concerning food rewards - 3 groups of participants: no stress, stress+beta blockers, stress+placebo. Found that stress+placebo group continued with habits they already formed. Stress+beta blockers group were as goal directed as no stress group, suggests beta blockers prevented stress induced bias wards habit behaviour
- Even though Artificial environment task, shows potentially useful application of beta blockers for dealing with psychological effects of stress
- benefits on performance
