- Modernity society emerged in the late 18th century
- Has four characteristics: nation state, capitalism, rationality, science and technology, individualism
- Nation state: the world has separate states in which they have a distinctive language, culture and norms
- Capitalism: capitalism is the economy of modern societies and focuses on wealth and labour divisions causing class conflicts
- Rationality, science and technology: decrease in religion and increase in knowledge therefore there is a progress in research e.g. medicine
- Individualism: decrease in traditional values and increase in finding own identity, also increase in egoism
