        • Go through Belgium to avoid F defences and defeat F. in 3 weeks
          • Then focus attention on Russia's army
        • Only 30 miles away from Paris - If plan achieved war outcome could be differently
        • G. had to adopted another defensive strategy
      • Aug 1914: Plan 17
        • Take Alsace-Lorraine - replaced by huge casualties
        • Partly failed due to the successful change in German defensive
        • French plan to make frontal attack on G. if war broke out
