- Mid Ocean Ridges
- Cracks up to 1600 km long that run at right angles to these
- Long chains of mountains crossing an abyssal plain
- Along the centre is a rift valley.
- Magma rushes up from the mantle causing the crust to be pushed apart
- Mid-Atlantic Ridge
- Each side of the abyssal plain moves apart West and East.
- Crust moves at around 1cm per year.
- Atlantic Ocean
- Iceland is located along the top of this ridge and has a mountain reaching a height of 2109.6m
- Every 200,000 years the polarity of the Earth's magnetic field flips.
- The magnetic orientation is 'locked' onto the iron particles in the new rock.
