  • Mid Ocean Ridges
    • Cracks up to 1600 km long that run at right angles to these
    • Long chains of mountains crossing an abyssal plain
    • Along the centre is a rift valley.
      • Magma rushes up from the mantle causing the crust to be pushed apart
    • Mid-Atlantic Ridge
      • Each side of the abyssal plain moves apart West and East.
      • Crust moves at around 1cm per year.
      • Atlantic Ocean
      • Iceland is located along the top of this ridge and has a mountain reaching a height of 2109.6m
    • Every 200,000 years the polarity of the Earth's magnetic field flips.
      • The magnetic orientation is 'locked' onto the iron particles in the new rock.
