  • Microscope
    • Light microscope
      • Uses glass lenses to refract light rays to produce an image (magnified image)
      • Must be thin (colourless), transparent and kept flat
      • Magnification = 1,000s
      • Stains
        • Chemicals which bind to chemicals on specimen
        • Methyl Blue and Iodine
        • Acetic orcein - stains DNA dark red
        • Gentian Violet - stains bacterial walls
    • Electron
      • Beams of electrons
        • Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
          • Shape + detail of smaller organelles
      • No colour, unless added later
      • Magnification = 100,000s
      • Has to be dead + dried
      • Has a vacuum so air particles don't interfere with electrons
    • Untitled
    • Magnification
      • 1mm - (x1000) = 1000 micrometer - (x1000) = 1,000,000 nanometer
      • Image size (in micrometer) = magnification x actual size (in micrometer)
        • I
          • M
          • A
            • Think of the name "Mia"
    • Resolution
      • A measure of the ability to distinguish between two different points
      • Depends on the wavelength of the form of radiation used
