  • Mercutio
    • Lively: "You have dancing shoes with nimble soles"
    • Talkative: "Peace, peace, Mercutio, peace. Thou talk'st of nothing."
    • His speech about "queen mab"
      • Shows a lot about himself as its full of puns and innuendos.
        • This shows how intelligent and witty he is.
    • He's more of a down to earth character
      • He says soldiers dream of "cutting foreign throats"
        • lovers "dream of love"- so dreams depend on the dreamer.
    • He's always mocking other characters. He constantly has energy.
      • He calls Tybalt "King of Cats" and "rat-catcher"
    • His speeches are full of wordplay and crazy ideas
      • Even when he's dying- "Ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man"
        • Mercutio's playing on the double meaning of the word "grave"
    • Mercutio is the first character to die in the play
      • all the energy in the play disappears
      • its an important turning point- " begins the woe" of tragic events in the rest of the play.
        • He wishes "a plague o' both your houses" - this reminds the audience how dangerous the fued is.
        • It also warns the audience that more suffering will happen.
    • Theme- Love.
      • He tells Romeo to stop being soppy.
      • He also makes a lot of sexual jokes, which contrast with Romeo's romantic view of love.
      • Mercutio's attitude towards love is cynical and a bit rude.
    • Theme- Honour
      • Mercutio should have been able to walk away from the fight, but he died because he was fighting to protect Romeo's honour.
        • Protective
        • Maybe Shakespeare was criticising the importance of honour and showing how pointless it is.
