    • This act safegaurds people with mental disorders and sets out circumstances in which they can be treated without consent

      • protects people who lose the ability to make descisions for themselves
      • prevents individuals from harming themselves
      • treatment cannot be forced on the individual unless their illness is servere
    • weaknesses
      • 'everyone should make their own decisions' which is stated by the law
      • does not take into account the individuals human rights
