  • Mendeleev
    • Other scientists including Dobereiner and Newlands had made huge discoveries however a pattern could not be found
      • Mendeleev arranged the elements in the order we now use
    • He arranged the elements by relative atomic mass
    • Mendeleev could work out the atomic mass of the missing elements, so predict their properties
      • However when they were eventually discovered, Mendeleev was correct anyway
    • Mendeleev's method of arranging elements meant there were gaps in his horizontal rows or 'periods'
      • Mendeleev however simply believed that this was because he had not discovered them yet
