- Mendeleev arranged the elements in the order we now use
- He arranged the elements by relative atomic mass
- Mendeleev could work out the atomic mass of the missing elements, so predict their properties
- However when they were eventually discovered, Mendeleev was correct anyway
- Mendeleev's method of arranging elements meant there were gaps in his horizontal rows or 'periods'
- Mendeleev however simply believed that this was because he had not discovered them yet
