- Brains way to recall, process and store important information
- Short term memory includes different day to day things such as where you left the keys, doctors appointments,the date etc
- Long term memory includes information that will be in your memory forever. Such as your name and Birthday as well as other important information
- Coding is the way memory is stored in different stores
- Experiment showed that information is coded acoustically (words sound similar) in STM. Information is coded semantically (words mean the same thing) in LTM
- Capacity is the amount of information that your memory can store
- Duration is the length of time memory can be held
- George Miller (1986) noted that we can typically recall 5 pieces of information at a time from our STM. This is called chunking
