- Memory
- The process by which we retain information about events that have happened in the past
- STM
- Your memory for events in the present or immediate past
- Duration: Less than 18 seconds (Peterson & Peterson) 90%:3s interval, 2%:18s
- Memorising symbols doesn't reflect real life + counting task could have caused poor recall rather than it decaying
- Capacity: 5 to 9 items // 9 times, 7 letters (Jacobs digit span)
- Doesn't account for individual differences // research shown most people remember 4 items
- Coded: Acoustically (Baddeley) STM easily remembered semantic words, but could not recall acoustic words as easily
- STM
- LTM
- Your memory for events that have happened in the more distant past
- Duration: Potenitally lasts a life time (Bahrick et al) after 48 years, 70% accurate recall
- Capacity: Potentially unlimited
- Coded: Semantically (Baddeley) LTM easily remembered acoustic words byt difficulty recalling semantic words
- Only waited 20 mins: not true measurement of LTM
- The process by which we retain information about events that have happened in the past
