- Melodic Inversion
- In melodic inversion, you keep the same intervals in the melody but you invert them, for example if the original melody goes up a major third the invertyed one goes down a major third
- It makes a melody sound very different but not completely different
- Retrograde
- Retrograde is playing the notes in reverse order but with the original rhythm
- You can also have a retrograde inversion
- Sequencing
- Sequencing is repeating a pattern but varying the notes.
- Imitation
- A phrase is repeated with slight changes each time
- Ostinato
- An Ostinato is a repeated pattern
- It can be in the bass line, melody or chord pattern
