  • Medicine Through Time
    • Prevention of disease 1700-1900
      • Simpsons Work on Anaesthetic
        • Development
          •  He looked for a way to decrease pain in childbirth. He discovered chloroform knocked him out.
        • Before
          • Opium,
          • Speed (but this could lead to accidents).
          • Laughing gas (which was good for extracting teeth).
          • Ether (which was flammable and caused vomiting).
        • Opposition
          • Opposition was overcome when Queen Victoria used chloroform when giving birth to her son in 1853.
          • There were issues as it had to be carefully administered and it could affect the heart. (for example Hannah Greener died from an overdose of chloroform in 1848 whilst having an infected toenail removed).
          • Others said God created pain so it was unnatural.
          • Anaesthetic allowed longer surgery and this increased the risk of infection.
      • Lister's Work on  Antiseptics
        • Before
          • Surgeons did not try to keep clean, and surgical tool were not cleaned.
          • Many doctors wore their most stained clothes to show how much experience they had.
          • Many medical students would be present at operations.
        • Development
          • Lister had read Pasteur’s work and realised infected flesh was rotting. He theorised the microbes caused the flesh to rot.
          • He developed the use of carbolic to clear bacteria from wounds, and began to soak bandages in carbolic. This helped wounds heal.
          • He published his results in the Medical journal the Lancet.
        • Opposition
          • Because germ theory wasn’t fully accepted other doctors didn’t believe the air was full of germs
          • It was popular for a short amount of time as Lister stopped using carbolic spray in 1890 as hospitals shifted towards aseptic surgery.
          • Some opposed due to carbolic irritating their skin and leaving behind an odd smell.
        • Lister used Pasteur’s work to link infection to germs.
      • Pasteur's Work - Germ Theory
        • Created germ theory when he studied which vinegar was going bad. It was published in 1861.
        • Came up with the Germ theory of infection after studying silkworms showing germs caused illness -  this was published in 1878.
        • In 1879 Pasteur created the first vaccine against chicken cholera.
        • Faced opposition in Britain as Dr Henry Bastian disagreed with Germ theory – Bastian supported spontaneous generation
