    • MANAGEMENT IN PLACE
      • BUILDING TECHNIQUES
        • Strict building regulations to ensure newer buildings designed/built to withstand earthquakes
          • -VE : some buildings had been built to meet regulations, but were poorly built and were severely damaged/destroyed
            • San Salvatore hospital in west L'Aquila was built in 2000, it should've been able to withstand the earthquake, but collapsed and patients had to be treated outside in tents
              • +VE - investigation put in place to find out why many modern buildings collapsed
      • PREDICTION
        • Seismologists were monitoring the area before the event, some people felt the hazard couldve been managed better
          • -VE : August 2009, group made a formal complaint that 6 seismologists  predict the earthquake - blamed scientists for large number of people killed and requested a criminal investigation
          • however currently impossible to predict exactly when and where earthquakes will happen

        • Italy has a civil protection department that trains volunteers to help with things like rescue operations

        • 12,000 rescue and support workers sent in to help with response
        • Mortgage payments, gas and electricity suspended
        • by end of 2009, 4500 new homes built to house 12,000 people who were homeless
        • The italian prime minister promised to build new town to replace L'Aquila as capital of the area
        • Money provided by the government to pay rent.
        • International teams with rescue dogs were sent in to look for survivors
