        • raised in St. Louis and stamps, Arkansas
      • experienced serious racial discrimination
        • had an unshakable faith and values in African-american family, community and culture
      • knew french, spanish, italian, arabic and the west african language fanti
    • as a teenager she loved the arts
      • won her a scholarship to study dance & drama at san francisco labor school
        • dropped out ages 14 first African-american female cable car conductor
          • later finished highschool and gave birth to son
            • worked as waitress and cook
    • 1954&55 toured Europe and studied dance
      • 1957- recorded first album
        • 1958- moved to new york
          • 1960- moved to Cairo, eygypt
            • 1961- moved to ghana taught dance and drama at university
    • met Malcolm x & in 1964 returned to us to help build his new organisation of African american unity
      • shortly after x's assassination martin Luther king contacted her
        • she was devastated by his assassination in 1968
    • she begun work on a book 'i know why the caged bird sings'
      • was published 1970
        • claimed enormous success
      • her published versus, non-fiction and fiction now include more than 30 best selling titles
