DNA-MARK AND JAN

?

  • Mark and Jan
    • Act as narrators throughout the play (similar dramatic technique transposed from Greek tragedies)
      • Traditionally narrators would act morally guiding the rest of the characters in a positive direction however they lack in this demonstrating a warped sense of humanity within the play.
    • Mark and Jan are responsible for the events surrounding the bullying of Adam that lead him falling into the grille (page 20-23) and they both try to justify their actions in scene 1 act 3.
      • MARK-'' we were just having a laugh, weren't we'' (repeated several times)
      • They also convince themselves that Adam is actually enjoying the bullying. MARK-''Oh yeah, Adam he was laughing harder than anyone'' (pg 21)
      • They laugh throughout their justifications however it is also punctuated with other words such as ''terrified'' ''crying'' ''stubbed out cigarettes'' ''punch him'' ''pegged a stone'' this shows their actions are violent, rough and vicious.
        • MARK-''Were having a laugh weren't we?'' He then tries to say it was banter ''Yeah Adam he was laughing more than anyone''
    • We get the impression that Mark and Jan might also be younger and less assertive members than the rest of the group. This is shown through there immaturity and looking to Phil for advice and leadership.
      • JAN asking Phil-''Are we going to get in trouble?'' PHIL-''If you go now and say nothing to no one about it, you wont get into trouble''
    • In the play, Mark and Jan are at the top of the characters list this implies that they may have more importance.
    • Act 1 scene 1- As the discussion continues the sense of panic and shock increases.
    • JAN- Her role in Phil's plan is to ''take the shoes, Lou you put them on, and enter the woods from the south entrance.'' '' Danny you enter from the east entrance with Jan on your back'' ''do not put her down unless its on concrete or a tree trunk, never when you're walking on mud'' '' You meet Lou near the bridge, you move around a bit, you exit from the South,''
    • MARK- His role with Cathy and Danny is to ''go to Adam's house, you wait until his mum's out, you break in''  They go through the window into Adam's room and Phil instructs to grab a pair of his shoes and a jumper with details such as ''don't touch the jumper, that's very important'' (repetition) and they put it in a plastic bag without touching it. Cathy and Mark go down a quite street and wait until its only them and a man, drop the jumper, wait till he picks it up covering it in DNA Get the man to drop it in the bag and say its going to a charity shop. Take it to the south entrance, tear it and chuck it in a hedge.
    • Because Mark and Jan bully Adam leading him to fall in the grille this sets in motion the events in the play.
