    • BELIEFS
      • Politically radicalised by his support for a printers strike when he was an apprentice.
      • Strong believer in pan-africanism and a separate African state.
      • His slogan was 'Africa for the Africans at home and abroad'
      • Claimed that God and Jesus were black, and set himself up to president of the Republic of Africa with a Napoleonic aristocracy of dukes and parades.
    • SUCCESSES
      • 1912: Set up the Universal ***** Improvement Association (UNIA) in Jamaica.
        • Claimed that it had 4 million members, making it the largest organisation.
      • 1916: Set up a shipping company called the Black Star line to trade with Africans worldwide.
      • Saw the importance of economic development: set up the ***** Factories Corporation to promote manufacture and trade among Africans.
      • He collected the considerable sum of $10 million and attracted very large amounts of support.
    • FAILURES
      • His commercial schemes collapsed when he accused of and imprisoned for fraud.
      • Returned to Jamaica after being imprisoned and set up a scheme were 12 million African Americans would be taking to Liberia.
        • This came to nothing and he died in 1940.
      • Due to economic failures he was seen as a isolated and bizarre figure.
