  • Malaria
    • Spread by female Anopheles mosquitos which carry the parasite Plasmodium which is a protocist.
    • When the mosquito feeds on humans they inject saliva containing anticoagulant and Plasmodium into the bloodstream. Plasmodium multiples in the liver. Leaves the liver and enters R.B.C. Plasmodium forms gametes.
      • An unifected mosquito takes a blood meal and takes in Plasmodium gametes. Gametes fuse within stomach. Plasmodium travel to salivary gland.
    • Humans prevent malaria by keeping doors/windows closed; insect repellents; clothing; and mosquito nets.
      • Mosquito numbers can be reduced by draining marshes; biological controls; insecticides; and spraying oil on fresh water.
      • Use of drugs can treat those affected (e.g. Quinine) and to prevent infection (e.g. Proguanil)
    • Malaria is increasing because of poor education on malarial measures; wars prevent implementation; few resources; banning of insecticides; global warming; no vaccines; insecticide resistance; and drug resistance.
