  • Maguire's Study into taxi drivers brains(2000)
    • AIM- to investigate whether doing a job that demands navigational experience and spending more years in that job affects the volume of the hippocampus.
    • METHOD- the design of this study is an independent measures design however the method is best described as a correlational analysis as the IV is whether your a taxi driver or a non taxi driver.
      • The DV of this study is the volume of the hippocampus.
      • They were matched on age gender and handedness.
      • The comparison group was a group of 50 participants that were all male and were right handed and were all aged 32-62.
        • SAMPLE- 16 licensed London taxi drivers that were all right handed and were aged  between 32 and 62.
      • SAMPLE- 16 licensed London taxi drivers that were all right handed and were aged  between 32 and 62.
    • RESULTS- taxi drivers have a greater grey matter volume in their posterior right hippocampus.
      • Controls had a greater right anterior hippocampus volume than taxi drivers and controls had a greater volume in the body of the right hippocampi.
      • Correlational analysis shown that the length of driving time compared to the measure of grey matter volume shown a significant differences.
    • ETHICS- Informed consent needed to be gained as they were going into an MRI scanner which may cause distress of the participant and is dangerous for people with pace makers or metal bones.
