  • Macbeth
    • "will all of Neptune's ocean wash this blood from my hand"
      • Neptune is the Greek god of water, enforces the idea that Macbeth is the tragic hero and shows he is starting to show his failure.
        • This also links to Baptism and how Macbeth feels guilty for what he has done. Water is used to baptise people and Macbeth is asking for a whole ocean to Baptise him.
          • This differs from Lady Macbeth who just asks for a little water. This infers that Macbeth shows more humane traits than Lady Macbeth reinforcing the idea that Lady Macbeth is inhumane and part of the supernatural forces.
      • Blood is thick and impure. Macbeth is starting to lose the good in him and is starting to become impure. This is also shown through his constant battle in him of good and evil. The regicide is one of the first things the audience see that give them an insight into what side Macbeth is steering towards.
        • Blood can stain. Macbeth committing regicide will stain his life with evil. Regicide was the ultimate sin and anyone who committed it would have been executed. This is ironic as in the last act of the play Macbeth is executed. This reinforces the idea that Macbeth is a tragic hero.
      • Macbeth commits the regicide in Act 2 Scene 1 which shows his quick descent into evil. This shows how Macbeth is a tragic hero and how his reign will be short.
        • A tragic hero is literary character who makes a judgement error that leads to their destruction. Macbeth is a tragic hero as her is of a high status, he is doomed from the start, he makes the audience feel fear through is evil, has a weakness of pride and is spiritually wounded by the witches
    • "life's but a walking shadow"
      • A shadow continually follows you. Macbeths guilt is like a shadow, it will always follow him. It is also always going to be with him, he will never ever leave his side, even when he dies.
        • A shadow is dark. Darkness is associated with the supernatural. The darker something is the more evil it contains. Macbeths shadow is really dark as he has committed many murders including regicide, the ultimate sin.
          • Macbeth is used to represent what happens if you take the path of evil. This was to evoke horror and fear in the Jacobean audience so they did not take the same path as Macbeth.
