    • Symptoms
      • Shortness of breath
        • Reduced air space due to fibrous tissue = less oxygen taken in
        • Thickened epithelium increases diffusion pathway = slow diffusion of oxygen
        • Loss of elasticity = hard to maintain diffusion gradient
      • Chronic, dry cough
        • Reflex to remove obstructing fibrous tissue
        • 'Dry' because nothing is removed
      • Chest pains
        • Pressure from fibrous tissue and scarring from coughing
      • Weakness and fatigue
        • Reduced intake of oxygen = reduced release of energy from respiration
