- Reduced air space due to fibrous tissue = less oxygen taken in
- Thickened epithelium increases diffusion pathway = slow diffusion of oxygen
- Loss of elasticity = hard to maintain diffusion gradient
- Chronic, dry cough
- Reflex to remove obstructing fibrous tissue
- 'Dry' because nothing is removed
- Chest pains
- Pressure from fibrous tissue and scarring from coughing
- Weakness and fatigue
- Reduced intake of oxygen = reduced release of energy from respiration
- Shortness of breath
