    • 'The orange light hadn't been switched on'
      • Shows that it may be not turned on for a reason, foreboding is used here. However, it could represent that it may be summer seen as it may not even be dark; the light does not need to be on.
      • Colour/Imagery
    • 'His feet still planted on the pavement'
      • The lamppost may be intimidating being so tall however it also shows he is seeing things because it doesn't make sense and the situation doesn't seem right. This also makes the reader question his sanity, due to him seeing a lamppost come to life.
    • 'He tumbled fragments of old windows in his hands like shattered marbles'
      • He may be troubled seen as he doesn't care if he plays with glass and injure himself. The word 'marbles' shows how sentimental the glass might be; for example, it may be because that's his old house that may be ruined for what ever reason.
      • Similie
    • 'More of the blackbirds than he'd ever seen before'
      • 'Blackbirds' have connotations of death as well as crows do, but it also symbolizes darkness seen as crows are black and typically seen in this way.
      • Symbolism
    • 'He heard nine chimes'
      • Nine is a typical bad number meaning something bad may happen, however it might just be showing that it is simply nine o'clock.
    • 'The lamppost looked like a tall man'
      • It shows the boy is going delusional but we don't know why. Maybe this links in with the fact that he has been through a traumatic experience and had his home destroyed, hense the fragments of glass that he plays with.
      • Imagery
    • 'He was face to face with the boy'
      • He might be so troubled and needing mental help that he doesn't realize that the 'man' is there.
