  • Louis XVI: causes of his downfall in 1792
    • Flight to Varennes
      • Louis had failed to understand the popularity of the events of 1789
      • As the support for a republic grew, Louis, Marie Antoinette and their three children fled to Austria to escape persecution
      • Louis is arrested and taken back to Paris after he is caught in the village of Varennes trying to get into Austria
      • The idea that the monarch tried to 'abandon his people' broke the bond between Louis and his subjects
      • The French people now knew that Louis was a traitor to his country
    • Jacobin opposition
      • Influenced a majority of French people to become directly involved in French politics
      • The Jacobins wanted a republic just like the public opinion
    • The October Days
      • A crowd of working-class women marched on Versailles on the 5th-6th October 1789
      • They demanded that Louis has to be taken to Paris and sign the August Decrees which would dismantle the feudal system
        • August Decrees - Lost large support of the second estates as they wouldn't be able to enjoy the privileges they once had
      • The king became a prisoner to the Paris mob
      • The mob fought with Royal guards and impaled their heads to parade them on their way back to Paris
    • War
      • American War of Independence - France gets involved since Louis wants revenge on Britain for his grandfather's death
      • With all finances going towards the war effort, French people are starving and suffering a poor quality life
