- Louis had failed to understand the popularity of the events of 1789
- As the support for a republic grew, Louis, Marie Antoinette and their three children fled to Austria to escape persecution
- Louis is arrested and taken back to Paris after he is caught in the village of Varennes trying to get into Austria
- The idea that the monarch tried to 'abandon his people' broke the bond between Louis and his subjects
- The French people now knew that Louis was a traitor to his country

- A crowd of working-class women marched on Versailles on the 5th-6th October 1789

- August Decrees - Lost large support of the second estates as they wouldn't be able to enjoy the privileges they once had
- The king became a prisoner to the Paris mob
- The mob fought with Royal guards and impaled their heads to parade them on their way back to Paris

- American War of Independence - France gets involved since Louis wants revenge on Britain for his grandfather's death
- With all finances going towards the war effort, French people are starving and suffering a poor quality life
