  • Long term memory
    • Episodic
      • Explicitly inspected and recalled consciously.
      • Refers to any event that can be reported from the person's life = personal experiences. e.g. The death of a relative
        • Strength of memory depends on the strength of the emotions experienced when the memory was coded
      • Autobiographical = memories of specific episodes of one's life
      • Experimental = When the learning of a fact has been associated with a memory of a specific episode of a persons life where it was learnt.
      • Brain region = Hippocampus
    • Semantic
      • Explictly inspected and recalled conciously
      • Memory of knowledge, facts, concepts and meaning. e.g. knowing the capital city of a certain country
      • Brain region = Temporal lobe
    • Procedural
      • Implicit knowledge recalled unconsciously
      • Physical tasks/skill based tasks e.g riding a bike
        • Mostly formed in early life, acquired through repetition and practice
      • Brain region = Cerebellum and motor cortex
  • Explicit = Declarative, easy to explain in words, available for conscious recall
    • Implicit = Non-declarative, difficult to explain in words, difficult to be consciously recalled
  • Evaluation
    • H.M supports this theory as he showed the hippocampus was responsible for episodic memory. After damage, he could not form new memories,
      • He could learn new skills. Shows procedural is a separate component.

    • Brain scans provide support for the distinction of different types of LTM
      • Different areas are active while accessing the 3 types. Research into this supports LTM being made up of 3 stores at least
