  • Loneliness and friendship
    • ranch workers
      • "Guys like us that work on race he's are the loneliest men on the planet" this clearly states that all ranch workers felt like they had no one to talk to to or trust in. None of the ranch workers seem to have any friends because of several factors such as their wealth, color or other things.
    • Candy
      • Candy is one of the main characters used to present loneliness in the novel as his best friend is a dog. He is an old man who does not fit in with any of the other workers and has accompaniedhimself with a dog as old as him. (Creates resemblance. He is off no use and therefore is insignificant. He apparently has no family. Candys loneliness is reflected in his eagerness to gossip with new comers such as George and lennie.
    • Crooks
      • Crooks has been used in the novel to show how all the black men were treated and how they felt during this time. Crooks is the only colored man in the novel and is isolated because of this factor from all the other ranch workers. He has no family  or friends which shows a humongous amount of loneliness. This enables him to act in ways that were classic field as rudeness. He was also beaten up and treated as he is an animal by the rich and other workers. He is not even given the basic essentials such as a normal bed to sleep in, instead he is told to sleep in the stable along with the horses which gives him a crooked back showing that he isn't not worth anything in the ranch because of his color.
    • Curley's wife
      • Curleys wife is also classified as a lonely character as she has married a Man she neither loves nor likes. This  in turn results in her flirting with every other man on the ranch and they would not like to give her any attention. She has no friends and I still the only woman at the ranch.
    • George and lennie
      • "Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world" he goes on to say that him and lennie are different from the other ranch workers because they have each other. Steinbeck uses this to present loneliness as a starting point and friendship as an escape
