  • Leaves and Photosynthesis
    • External adaptations
      • Broad- absorb a lot of light, do more photosynthesis
      • Thin- diffusion distance is small for CO2 molecules
    • Chlorophyll- absorb light from different parts of the spectrum
    • Vascular bundles- carry water around the plant
    • Stomata- pores allow CO2 to enter the leaf
    • Internal adaptations
      • Outer epidermis- transparent, no barriers to the entry of light
      • Upper palisade layer- contain chloroplasts, will receive most of the light
      • Spongey mesophyll cells- loosely spaced, diffusion of gases between cells and the atmosphere
        • Large surface area to volume ratio
    • Guard cells- control the opening and closing of stomata, regulating water loss, CO2 and O2
    • Many pigments
      • Maximise the Sun's energy
      • Chlorophyll a and b, carotene and xanthophylls

A clear mind map on the adaptations of leaves for efficient photosynthesis which is a topic found in most GCSE specifications. It would be useful to add some colour to this mind map to separate the different ideas. Use this with a clear diagram of the leaf to learn the names of the layers and cells and their functions.
