- Leaves and Photosynthesis
- External adaptations
- Broad- absorb a lot of light, do more photosynthesis
- Thin- diffusion distance is small for CO2 molecules
- Chlorophyll- absorb light from different parts of the spectrum
- Vascular bundles- carry water around the plant
- Stomata- pores allow CO2 to enter the leaf
- Internal adaptations
- Outer epidermis- transparent, no barriers to the entry of light
- Upper palisade layer- contain chloroplasts, will receive most of the light
- Spongey mesophyll cells- loosely spaced, diffusion of gases between cells and the atmosphere
- Large surface area to volume ratio
- Guard cells- control the opening and closing of stomata, regulating water loss, CO2 and O2
- Many pigments
- Maximise the Sun's energy
- Chlorophyll a and b, carotene and xanthophylls
- External adaptations
