  • Learned behaviour
    • Habituation
      • when an animal learns not to respond to a repeated stimulus
      • e.g. sea hare stops withdrawing its gill if it is harmlessly touched many times
      • police horses
        • repeatedly exposed to smoke and find out that nothing bad happens, so learn not to be afraid of it
    • Classical conditioning
      • an animal learns to perform a reflex action in response to a different stimulus
      • e.g. Pavlov's dog
        • salivates when given food
          • Pavlov rang bell before feeding dog
            • dog associated bell with food and salivated at bell
    • Oparent conditioning
      • an animal changes its behaviour as a result of experiencing rewards or punishments
      • e.g. a rat in a cage may by change press a switch that turns off an unpleasant bright light
        • it associates the behaviour with the reward and continues to do it
      • sniffer dogs
        • rewarded when they recognise the correct smell, so learns to search for the smell
