- Learned behaviour
- Habituation
- when an animal learns not to respond to a repeated stimulus
- e.g. sea hare stops withdrawing its gill if it is harmlessly touched many times
- police horses
- repeatedly exposed to smoke and find out that nothing bad happens, so learn not to be afraid of it
- Classical conditioning
- an animal learns to perform a reflex action in response to a different stimulus
- e.g. Pavlov's dog
- salivates when given food
- Pavlov rang bell before feeding dog
- dog associated bell with food and salivated at bell
- Pavlov rang bell before feeding dog
- salivates when given food
- Oparent conditioning
- an animal changes its behaviour as a result of experiencing rewards or punishments
- e.g. a rat in a cage may by change press a switch that turns off an unpleasant bright light
- it associates the behaviour with the reward and continues to do it
- sniffer dogs
- rewarded when they recognise the correct smell, so learns to search for the smell
