  • The light dependent reactions
    • overview
      • occurs in the thylakoids
      • produces ATP and NADPH for the calvin cycle
      • requires the absorption of light
    • excitation and ETC
      • Photoionisation
        • light energy is absorbed by PS2 and electrons are released
        • these electrons assoiate with electron carriers and move down the ETC
          • REDOX reactions
      • photolyisis
        • occurs to replace the electrons lost by PS2
        • use of light energy to split a water molecule
        • produces H protons and O2
          • protons move out - sets up proton gradient
            • chemiosmosis
              • protons move out of the thylakiod membrane via ATP synthase
                • produces ATP from ADP+Pi
    • PS1
      • electrons from ECT move to PS1 where they are reexcited by photons
      • electron combines with H and joins NADP to reduce it to NADPH
    • The light independent reactions
      • overview
        • uses ATP and NADPH to produce TP
      • Carbon fixation
        • Co2 is fixed to a mole of RuBP = 6C
          • the is unstable so it splits to 2 GP
      • Reduction
        • electrons from NADPH reduce GP using energy from ATP
          • Produces TP
      • regeneration
        • 1TP leaves the cycle, the other 5 are used to regenerate the 3 moles of RuBP
          • Uses rest of ATP
