  • Layers of the Earth
    • Inner core
      • this is at the centre of the Earth.
      • Solid ball containing lots of iron and nickle
    • Outer core
      • semi-molten also containing lots of iron and nickle
    • Mantle
      • surrounds the core and is mostly made of silicate rocks
      • part of mantle nearest the core is rigid
      • layer above this called the asthenosphere is semi-molten (it can flow)
      • top of the mantle is rigid
    • Crust
      • rigid top part of mantle + the crust = lithosphere
      • two types of crust: continental and oceanic
      • Continental crust is thicker (30-70km) and less dense
      • Oceanic crust is thinner (6-10km) amd more dense
