- Inner core
- this is at the centre of the Earth.
- Solid ball containing lots of iron and nickle
- Outer core
- semi-molten also containing lots of iron and nickle
- Mantle
- surrounds the core and is mostly made of silicate rocks
- part of mantle nearest the core is rigid
- layer above this called the asthenosphere is semi-molten (it can flow)
- top of the mantle is rigid
- Crust
- rigid top part of mantle + the crust = lithosphere
- two types of crust: continental and oceanic
- Continental crust is thicker (30-70km) and less dense
- Oceanic crust is thinner (6-10km) amd more dense
- Inner core
