  • Kidney Function
    • Nephrons are the filtration units in the kidneys
      • A high pressure is built up which squeezes water, urea, ions and sugar out of the blood and into the Bowman's capsule
      • Membranes between the blood vessels and the Bowman's capsule act like filters so big molecules like proteins stay in the blood
    • Reabsorption
      • As liquid flows along the nephron substances are selectively reabsorbed.
      • ALL the glucose is reabsorbed via active transport
      • Sufficient ions are reabsorbed via active transport. Excess ions are not.
      • Sufficient water is reabsorbed.
    • Release of wastes
      • Remaining substances like urea continue out of the nephron and out of the bladder as urine.
