  • Key medical dates!
    • Vesalius - Fabric of the Human Body- 1543
    • Harvey- An Anatomical Account of the motion of the Heart & Blood in Animals- 1628.
    • Edward Jenner published his findings on smallpox (through experiment on James Phipps) in 1798.
      • Smallpox vaccination made compulsory by Govt in 1850.
    • 1842- Edwin Chadwick- publishes a report which makes a link between living conditions & poor health explicit.
    • 1848- Public Health Act- largely useless as none of the recommendati-ons were enforceable.
    • 1858- The Great Stink - forced Govt. hand to invest in public health, Joseph Bazelgette was given money to build a sewer network system spanning London.
    • 1867- working men given the vote- Govt have to improve the 'lot' of the workers.
    • 1875- Public Health this time enforceable.
      • All towns & cities had to provide clean water, sewage disposal & decent housing.
    • 1909- Paul Erhlich's team discovered that Salvarson 606 killed the syphilis germ. The first magic bullet.
    • 1928- Alexander Fleming discovered the miracle properties of penicillin.
      • It took 2 chemists, Florey & Chain & a war for penicillin to be mass produced.
    • 1953- using Rosalind's Franklin's crystallography, James Watson & Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA.
      • 1990 scientists led by Crick began to map all the genes that make up human DNA. Completed in 2000.
    • 1902 - Midwives to receive better training & needed to be registered.
    • 1906 free school meals introduced.
    • 1907 health visitors appointed to look after kids.
    • 1908 Old age pensions introduced.
    • 1911- Health Insurance Act free medical treatment & sick pay.
    • NHS 5th July 1948. Free health care for all "from the cradle to the grave".
  • 1862- the link between dirt & disease is scientifically proven by Louis Pasteur.
