  • Justification by Works
    • Biblical basis is in the NT in the letter of James.
      • "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead" -James 2:26
    • Faith on it's own is usefull
      • Doesn't help those in need.
      • Even demons believe in good, thus it can't be enough for salvation.
    • Faith is expressed via works
      • This was seen in Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son for God.
      • Also seen in the protection of Joshua's spies by a prostitute in order to assist the Isrealite conquest of Jericho.
    • Parable of the sheep and goats
      • Many Christians accept the need for works because of Jesus' teaching in this parable.
      • Judgement will be based on the individual human's help for or failure to help those in need.
      • No mention is made of faith
        • The judgement being carried out is universal:
          • "Before him will be gathered all nations"
    • Sermon on the Mount
      • Jesus stressed the importance of doing God's will on the Sermon of the Mount.
      • "but only the one wh does the will of my Father who is in Heaven." -Matthew 7:21
