  • Early 1209 - Stephen Langton landed in England from France to see King John and take the position of Archbishop of Canterbury. John refused to meet with him although John did meet Stephen's brother Simon.
    • 1208 - Pope puts England under interdict as John still refuses Langton.
      • Bishops flee from England into the European Continent. Monks of Canterbury, Bishops of London, Ely and Worcester go into exile.
        • John benefits from their vacancies economically.
        • John used fines and imprisonment to try and bully the clergy into ignoring the Interdict.
      • John confiscated Church property.
