- Chapter 1 We are introduced to Utterson who goes on a walk with Enfield where they notice a strange door and Enfield tells the story of seeing Hyde trample a ******* the street going through the door and getting a check from Jekyll to pay the family off.
- Utterson contemplates Jekyll's will which says to leave all f Jekyll's possessions to Hyde then Utterson talks to Lanyon about Jekyll and Lanyon he says Jekyll was researching 'unscientific balderdash'then Utterson hunts down Hyde and talks to him.
- Chapter 3 it is two weeks later and Jekyll invites a few well respected men to dinner including Utterson Afterwards Utterson stays and talks to Jekyll about his will and Jekyll laughs it off but after more persistence just tells Utterson his situation is strange
- chapter 4: nearly a year later The murder of an elderly gentlemen is witnessed by a woman who recognises Hyde. Utterson is called and he recognises the murder weapon as the broken half of a walking cane he gave to Jekyll. they go to Hydes residence and find the other half of the cane .
- Chapter 5: Utterson goes to Jekyll and asks him if he is harbouring Hyde but Jekyll assures him he will never see Hyde again. He shows Utterson a letter that shows this. Utterson asks his clerk Guest to analyse the handwriting and he sees a resemblance to Jekyll's . Utterson believes it is a forgery to cover for Hyde's escape.
