- Psychic Determinism- Thoughts and feelings are determined by life or death instincts and by repressed conflicts.
- Soft Determinism- people have a choice (free will) yet at the same time behaviour is to some extent predictable and does have a cause.

- Free Will- The idea that we are able to have some choice in how we act and assumes that we are free to choose our behaviour, we are self determined.

- Science is heavily deterministic in its search for causal relationships (explanations) as it seeks to discover whether X causes Y, or whether the independent variable causes changes in the dependent variable.
