- Isotopes
- Atoms of the same element which have different numbers of neutrons
- Isotopes have the same atomic number but a different mass number
- Carbon has two common Isotopes...
- Carbon 12 - which has 6 protons and 6 neutrons in the nucleus
- Carbon-14 which has 6 protons and 8 neutrons
- The extra neutrons can sometimes make the nucleus unstable therefore radioactive
- Different Isotopes of elements have different physical properties
- Higher Density
- Radioactive
- Isotopes of an element always have the same chemical properties
- Because reactions depend on the electronic structure. As their atoms will have same number of electrons, the electronic structure for all isotopes is the SAME!
- Hydrogen has 3 Isotopes...
- Hydrogen, Tritium and Deuterium
- Each has a different mass and tritium is radioactive. However they all react with oxygen to make water.
- Hydrogen, Tritium and Deuterium
