  • Intro to the Bible
    • Old Testament
      • Contains the writings of Jewish scriptures.
      • Fixed in form by 1 century BCE.
      • Contains a wide variety of literature types.
        • Eg. poetry, prose, ect...
      • 4 main parts
        • The first 5 books are known as the Torah ('law').
          • Contains many law codes, eg 10 commandments.
          • Also contains the history of the origins of Jews.
            • Starts with Genesis creation and ends with the death of Moses.
        • Historial writings that tell the history of Jews.
          • Starts with the conquest of Canaan and ending in the period of Persian rule in the fifth century BCE.
        • Prophetic books.
          • Contain the insights of individuals into God's purposes for Israel.
        • Wisdom literature.
          • Covers a wide range of themes and types of writing.
            • Includes an examination of the suffering of the innocent, ****** love poetry and a commentary on life that is sometimes cynical and agnostic.
    • New Testament
      • Contains writings that date mainly from the first century.
      • Reached a fixed form by the 4th century.
      • 4 main parts
        • The Gospels.
          • Contain the good news about Jesus, recounting his ministry, passion (his suffering and death) and resurrection.
        • Acts of the Apostles
          • History of the early Church.
        • The Epistles.
          • Letters written mainly to Christian communities to give guidance on belief and lifestyle.
        • The Book of Revelation.
          • Uses graphic imagery to describe the Last Judgement.
    • What is the Bible?
      • Testament means 'covenant'/ 'promise'
        • Old Testament
          • Refers to the covenant that God made with Israel on Mt Sinai through Moses.
        • New Testament
          • Refers to the covenant made by God with humanity through the death of Jesus.
      • Has 2 parts: OT and NT.
        • These 2 books together create the 'Canon of the Bible'.
          • Canon of the Bible refers to the covenant made by God with humanity through the death of Jesus.
      • The earliest writings date from the early in the first millennium BCE.
        • However, some are based on oral traditions that are centuries older.
        • The latest writings are from the second century CE.
      • The word Bible means 'books'.
        • It's a collection of books that express beliefs about God and God's purpose for humanity and the rest of creation.
