  • Intro to Cognitive Psychology
    • Aims to understand human cognition by studying behaviour
    • Methods of study
      • Experimental Cognitive Psychology
        • Controlled experiments simplify & use analogy of computer
          • Bottom up (sensory input - process - output) vs top down (context influences output)
          • Intangible concepts --> models - generate predictions & test
        • Weaknesses: Low ecological validity, task impurity (more than 1 cog process) & task specificity (ungeneralizable to other experiments)
      • Cognitive Neuroscience
        • Uses brain imaging to correlate tasks to brain areas
        • Weaknesses: Findings are correlational & don't say what processes are, low ecological validity
      • Cognitive Neuropsychology
        • Uses patient evidence & assesses task performance in patients
        • Weaknesses: Can't replicate because brain damage is different, compensatory mechanisms may have occurred from brain damage & tightly controlled experiments
      • Computational Cognitive Science
        • Uses developing computer models
