- Innocent Suffering
- Some forms of suffering seem unfair - e.g. children who are victims of war or famine, babies who have done nothing wrong
- The story of Job in the Bible illustrates this - a righteous man has huge suffering out upon him at no point does he sin but he continues to suffer
- Gods reply is that he has a reason for it, and just because job cant see and understand it doesn't mean that it isn't justified
- Society workd on the principle of justice - everyone should be treated how they deserve
- This issue of injustice is the root problem for innocent suffering
- Innocent suffering raises the problem as the nature of someone being 'innocent' means that they are blameless and so undeserving of any punishment
- WE expect that when we do something wrong, we should be punished
