  • inherited characteristics
    • genes are found on long structures called chromosomes
      • these structures are found in the nucleus
        • each body cell has 46 copies of each of these structures
    • different genes for the same characteristic are called alleles
      • an example of this is the gene, eye colour and its alleles would be blue, brown and green
    • heterozygous- the alleles are different types eg. Ee
    • homozygous- the alleles are the same eg. EE
    • allele- different versions of a gene
    • dominant alleles- observed if present
    • recessive allele- observed if dominant allele is absent
    • genotype- genetic makeup
    • phenotype- charactaristicsobserved
