- Pathogens are microorganisms that cause infectious disease. There are 4 types:
- Bacteria
- may produce toxins (poison) that damage tissues & make us feel ill. They reproduce rapidly. Are killed by antibiotic drugs
- Virus
- infectious agent that reproduces rapidly only inside the living cells of a host. Are not killed by antibiotic drugs
- may infect plants or animals
- Can be spread by direct contact, water or air
