      • After reading pasteur's germ theory in 1864, lister learned that carbolic acid kills parasites.
        • in 1865, he soaked bandages in carbolic acid so that the wounds did not get infected
        • he used the acid to clean wounds and equiptment
          • he also invented a spray to clean the air
        • in 1867 he announced that his ward had been free from infections for nine months
