  • Infection and Response (Part 1)
    • Comunicable Diseases
      • Pathogens
        • Pathogens are microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease.
        • Both Plants and Animals can be infected by pathogens.
      • Bacteria
        • Bacteria are very small cells that reproduce rapidly inside your body.
        • They make you feel ill by producing toxins that damage your cells and tissues.
      • Viruses
        • Viruses are not cells and they also reproduce rapidly inside your body.
        • They are inside your cells and they replicate themselves. The cell will then burst, releasing new viruses.
        • Viral Diseases
          • Measles- Spread by droplets from an infected persons sneeze or cough.
          • HIV- Spread by sexual contact or by exchanging bodily fluids.
          • Tobacco Mosaic Virus- affects many species of plants.
      • Fungi
        • Some fungi are single celled and others have a body which is made up of hyphae.
        • Hyphae can grow and penetrate human skin and the surface of plants, causing disease.
        • Rose Black Spot- is a fungal disease.
    • Pathogens can be spread by: Water, Air and Direct Contact.
    • Fighting Disease
      • Your Immune System can attack pathogens by using White Blood Cells.
        • White Blood Cells can engulf pathogens and digest them. This is called phagocytosis.
        • They can also produce a protein called antibodies which find similar bacteria or viruses.
        • They produce antitoxins, which counteract toxins produced by bacteria.
  • Fungi
    • Some fungi are single celled and others have a body which is made up of hyphae.
    • Hyphae can grow and penetrate human skin and the surface of plants, causing disease.
    • Rose Black Spot- is a fungal disease.
