- James SImpson
- His main discovery was the qualities of chloroform and he is the 'champion of obstetric anesthasia'.
- In Liverpool he experimented with chloroform and introduced it into surgery.
- In November 1847
- Tis was better than ether as it didn't have the drawbacks that ether did. It made patients unconscious and when they woke up they couldn't remember anything.

- Prepared and inhaled nitrous oxide (LAUHGING GAS)
- In the lab discovered gases. He realised that the Nitrous Oxide made him happy/silly. Therefore he believed this would be a good pain relief.
- In the surgery it dulled the pain on minor operations.

- Robert Liston
- His main discovery was Ether
- He discovered Ether at the University of Edinburgh
- He had a 300% mortality rate in Surgery. This made pain disappear and it completly knocked the patients out.
- The opposition was that Ether smelled really bad and irritated eyes. Also gave patients a bad stomach.
- Joseph Lister
- Sir Joseph Lister is famous for being the founder of antiseptic surgery. In 1865, some time after Louis Pasteur discovered that bacteria cause fermentation,
- Lister discovered that germs were also the cause of pus and infection.
- In 1867, Lister championed the use of carbolic acid as an antiseptic, such that it became the first widely used antiseptic in surgery.
